Who is Kyoko Tanaka?

Kyoko Tanaka San Diego Graphic Designer
Kyoko Tanaka

I tell people, "I've been a graphic designer since B.C.–Before Computers." I designed concepts on paper using an Exacto knife and used wax to paste up designs. I've worked in Tokyo, Chicago, New York, and Watertown (just outside of Boston), and enjoyed working for a design studio, an advertising agency, an architecture firm, and a publisher. When I moved to San Diego, I started Tanaka Graphics.

It's been quite a journey since I left Japan over twenty years ago–when I didn't speak any English at all. But I quickly realized that communication can happen with a photo or a drawing. With my editorial design and production experience in Japan, I was able to make my way to where I am now.

Some things you are born with are not easy to change. I am a Japanese graphic designer. My eye is influenced by Eastern Zen simplicity and craftsmanship. I value negative space to avoid clutter in busy designs. My design style is classic, authentic, and simple.

In addition, I practice Japanese calligraphy. Recently, I have rediscovered my roots and now practice Sumi-e, Japanese brush painting. I still like drawing in black and white, just like calligraphy and Zen art. The quiet breath, making strokes of ink, the smell of ink and texture of paper, the spirit and rhythm of brush strokes... it is simple yet direct. It allows space for me to imagine, feel, and breathe. In the graphic design world, simple things are not easy. Often times, less is more. This sumi-e practice is my foundation of design.

Since I came to the United States, I have met many amazing women from all over the world. As a mother of two children, I especially admire moms who manage everything, plus make their entrepreneurial dreams come true! And there are lots of those talented, determined mothers. I've been learning from them, and will continue to do so.

In 2009, I was one of five moms and professional women in the San Diego area who got together to create "Moms in Business Unite," a conference for moms as well as women without children to learn how to move their entrepreneurial dreams forward. We shared, inspired, and soared. I am very lucky to serve as a committee member for this group of amazing women.

When I'm not designing websites or building brands, I serve as an ambassador with our beloved family dog Cinnamon at the Humane Society of San Diego in their Pet-Assisted Therapy program. Twice a month, we visit people who love animals but are in a retirement home or other living facility that does not allow pets. We help bring smiles to their faces! I am so lucky to have a dog that is friendly and cute! If you ever see us there or anywhere else in San Diego, please say hi!
